GeneralA bangalore to munnar road trip is one of the better long drives in South India and one of the most consistently underestimated. The distance is around 550 kilometres depending on the route, which people convert into eight hours and then discover is closer to twelve once the ghat section is included. Done in a single push it is a hard day. Split across two, with a night in Coimbatore or Mysore, it becomes a genuinely enjoyable part of the holiday. This guide covers the two main routes, where the sensible stops sit, what the final climb demands, and how the shorter approaches from Coimbatore and Madurai compare.
This is the faster and more commonly driven line. It runs south on the national highway through Hosur and Salem to Coimbatore, then west through Udumalpet and Marayoor before the final climb. Most of it is four lane highway in decent condition.
The pay off comes near the end. The stretch through Marayoor and Chinnar drops into a dry, open landscape quite unlike the tea country, then climbs sharply into it. It is the more interesting hour of the whole drive and worth arriving in daylight for.
Coimbatore is the natural overnight if you are splitting the journey, sitting roughly two thirds of the way and offering plenty of options. From there it is a comfortable half day to the property, which leaves the afternoon free.
The western line is longer and slower but breaks up differently. It runs through Mysore, drops through Wayanad into Kozhikode, then south along the coast before turning inland.
It suits travellers who want to see more of Kerala on the way rather than crossing Tamil Nadu at speed. It also pairs naturally with a longer trip that includes the backwaters, which is the shape our extended itinerary follows.
The trade off is time. Thirteen to fourteen hours of driving is not a single day for most people, and the ghat descent into Wayanad is slow. Plan an overnight and treat it as a two day drive from the start.
If you are flying into Tamil Nadu rather than driving from Bengaluru, both Coimbatore and Madurai are considerably closer. Coimbatore is roughly 160 kilometres and four hours through Udumalpet and Marayoor, which is the same last stretch as route one.
Madurai is around 140 kilometres and a similar four hours, approaching through Theni and Bodinayakanur before a steep climb past the high tea estates. It is the shortest approach on paper and one of the slowest per kilometre.
Our table of distances from the usual origin cities sets these out side by side, including the coastal options, so you can compare before committing to an airport.
Whichever route you take, the last 40 to 50 kilometres are hill road. Continuous bends, limited overtaking, buses and lorries taking the full width on corners, and a steady climb to around 1,600 metres. Nothing about it is dangerous if you drive to it.
Fuel before you start the climb rather than during it. Stations thin out considerably above Adimali and Bodinayakanur, and range anxiety on hairpins in fading light is an avoidable experience.
Mobile signal drops in and out on the climb, so download your map offline before you leave the plains. The turn for Anachal comes before the town centre, and our write-up on the village shows how it sits relative to the main attractions.

If you insist on one day, leave Bengaluru before six in the morning. That gets you onto the climb in afternoon light rather than after dark, which is the whole point. Leaving at nine means arriving at nine at night on an unfamiliar hill road.
Avoid the peak of the south west monsoon for a self drive if you have the choice. Visibility on the ghats drops hard and landslip closures are not unusual. Our write-up on the wet months covers the current picture, and the national weather service is the source worth checking the week before.
Carry water, something to eat and a warm layer accessible rather than in the boot. The temperature difference between Coimbatore at midday and Anachal at nine in the evening is substantial. The rest is in our checklist of what to bring.
The drive is a good one and rewards being taken seriously. Choose the Salem and Coimbatore line if you want to cover ground, the Mysore line if the journey is part of the holiday, and in either case build in one overnight unless you genuinely enjoy twelve hour days behind the wheel. Arrive in daylight, fuel up before the climb, and let us know roughly when to expect you. Tell us your dates and we will keep the kitchen open if you are running late, which on this drive is more likely than not.
